Anybody have HBO?

I really want to see the Game of Thrones series that's starting on Sun 4/17. Also, we'll be getting the DVDs of True Blood S3 soon, and then S4 will start on HBO not too long after we're done with it. I don't really want to pay $10/mo, but would chip in a few bucks for access to somebody else's HBO, especially if you can get the HD recordings. :-)

Thought of this now because there was an ad for GoT over 101 on the way to Xta's bday dinner.

I don't have HBO, and neither am I in your location, but I wanted to chime in and say that I sympathize greatly. I've been re-reading all the books and am waiting breathlessly for July. (Still, in the meantime, there is Doctor Who coming up soon! That's not cold biscuits & Spam by any standards. :)

I was going to subscribe to HBO for Game of Thrones and True Blood, but then discovered that because I don't have digital cable, my bill would go from $42 to $77 - for two shows on one channel. I would be fine with $10-$14 a month - I *want* to give HBO my money to encourage them to keep making more seasons, but I don't want to give double that fee to Time Warner as well.

Consequently, I've decided to stream it and buy it when it comes out on DVD.

(there's a four page pullout ad in Vanity Fair too.)

We're too far apart for a sharing scenario to be useful, but we did subscribe to HBO just to get GoT. We were surprised to discover that doing so gave us some kind of weird promo package that resulted in paying $20 *less* per month. Worth looking into.

Are you on Comcast? I called them a couple weeks ago to ask whether there might be some kind of package, and they basically said I'd need to upgrade to the next layer of digital service, and then I could have HBO for three months free, and $10/mo after that... Definitely no reduction.

Nope, Astound. We did already have the minimum watchable digital cable (the second-lowest tier, I think), so maybe we were already paying too much.
