George Bush, Insurance Pitchman.

So, in reading Brad DeLong's Semi-Daily Journal, I recently ran into a referenced WaPo article on how Colin Powell has been bad-mouthing John "You disagree with me, I keel you!" Bolton. Unrelated to the article, I noticed that the accompanying photo shows President Bush standing in front of a large projected logo: "Trusted Choice®". I initially thought that maybe this was because the government had decided to start registering trademarks on its slogans and the names of its policy intiatives -- creepy, but vaguely understandable in an IP-law climate where TiVo feels it has to send a nasty letter to people who use its trademark as a verb.

But the truth may turn out to be far more embarrassing: It looks like this probably was an event sponsored by an insurance agency* -- and why not, when Bush has been so generous to the finance and insurance industries, and is trying to give them a windfall in the form of low-return annuities derived from private accounts? -- and they got their logo up on the wall.

What's next? Bush appearing in front of a giant Nike swoosh?

No matter how cynical you get, no matter how craven and idiotic you consider these guys... they find something even stupider to foist on the nation.

* Correction -- it's a collective insurance brand sponsored by the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America.
