Chesapeake Bay ecosystem collapse...

This series in the Washington Post is really depressing. Between pollution, changes in the composition of the bay floor due to sediments washing downstream from farms and dredging in commercial shipping channels, and warming due to climate change and the use of Bay Water as coolant at a couple local power stations, the whole unique ecosystem that supported people by the Bay for (literally) milennia has been wrecked. It looks like it may be irreparable.

The entire ocean is going to look like Darwin's Nightmare soon if people don't get a handle on overfishing, pollution, and climate change. And if acidification keeps progressing at the current rate, dead fish will be the least of our problems -- dead phytoplankton are a lot scarier; they perform a significant portion of the whole world's photosynthesis.
